Sho Shin Duo – Free The Cat

Description

The name “Sho-Shin” is derived from a concept of the Zen Buddhism which means “beginner’s mind”, and express the idea of a fresh, spontaneous, trans-idiomatic approach to musical improvisation. The duo has already performed in numerous contexts in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland (Donau115, T-Berlin, Centro d’Arte di Padova, Novemetis Festival, Sile Jazz, Spazio Aereo, Troglobatem Festival).

"(...) Sho Shin is term from Zen Buddhism meaning ‘beginner’s mind’. Riccardo La Foresta and Riccardo Marogna choose it as the name for their duo work. Marogna plays Bb clarinet, bass clarinet and electronics. La Foresta drums and percussions. An explosive duo. This one rocks, and even swings. That is something I don’t often say of free improvised music. But in this case, it is exactly what is happening. Very enjoyable, spirited and inspired battles of free improvised music. A bit about their backgrounds: Marogna is an improviser and composer with an interest for electronics. Het studied at the prestigious IRCAM. He leads his ensemble Oktopus Connection that also has a record out on Setola di Maiale. He is also part of Aire, an avant-jazz quartet and Schrödinger’s Cat. La Foresta is part of the Joseph Circelli Vinkel Trio from the Bologna-area. La Foresta proves himself as a percussionist with many ideas in this collaboration with Marogna. Many different patterns, colours and sounds come out of his hands. Marogna is an equally capable musician. In each of the eleven tracks they develop their ideas in a different direction, And always in a passionate and lively performance." DM, Vital Weekly, 2016.
