WILLEM - LABEL 1 (SEPTEMBER)

TXT FRM WILLEM:

I chose Zeeslag (game) and Rotterdam Collective (vinyl) for their visual similarities. During a game of Zeeslag, small pins with a little ball on top are placed in a raster (together with some plastic boats). It seems that the same thing happened to the heads of all participating artists on the 80's punk record Rotterdam Collective.
I chose Marc Bijl's Flash Art (magazine/book) because it is full of great examples of daily situations, not made bigger or more complex than they truly are. The images seem to be honest about and toward the subject of it. Honesty towards your subject is quite important, if you ask me. In this book there are also a lot of words written on 'symbols replacing words'. I enjoy this irony and try not to focus on the words too much.
Rotterdam 2040 is a book that shows you what big of a difference adding a couple of words to a picture can make. It adds some interesting contexts to images which at first sight don't look too interesting. Highly enjoyable.
Also I selected two zines from the archive. One is called Bastards, from the other I don't remember the name anymore but it said 'wat nou toen?! NU is veel leuker' (what about then?! NOW is way more fun) on the back. That's a punk attitude I like a lot. Embracing the times you live in and making something out of it. Because that's the fun thing of NOW right? To make things.
