Their trio is a mini-fanfare. Rooted in the fanfare tradition, drawing on wind music from all over the world. The three musicians, Janfie van Strien (1969) - soprano sax, Arno Bakker (1968) - sousaphone and Joop van der Linden (1966) - trombone, have found a sound all their own, and sometimes sound like a full orchestra. The trio plays together like a chamber orchestra, improvises like a jazz orchestra and sounds like a brass band. They play their own work, and adapt world songs from klezmer and Balkan traditions, African highlife and Latin American music. Light-heartedly performed by three seasoned musicians. The Boys Driest explore their (band) sound and possibilities. They played with drummers (Michael Vatcher, Joost Lijbaart), brass and reed players (Roy Paci, Matt Darriau, Ronald Snijders), singers, stand up comedians and bands (including Buena Vista Social Club). They also initiated projects with a full brass band (CWO) and the Con Tempo Stringquartet from Ireland, all with their own compositions. And because they have been around since the 90s, there were many concerts. North Sea Jazz Festival, Lowlands, Bimhuis and Grand Theatre, the Summer Jazz Bike Tour, too many to mention. They traveled to the Russian Volga, South Africa, Morocco and Great Britain, among other places.
