JOY DIVISION : UNDER REVIEW
joy divison, music documentary,
This 70-minute film starts with the band’s origins in early incarnation Warsaw, and moves through their short but hugely impacting time as Joy Division, even touching on the remaining members’ future following the tragic death of frontman Ian Curtis… The program further reveals the work the band undertook with legendary producer Martin Hannett. This DVD digs deep into the troubled soul of Curtis, whose personal life weighed him down, cruelly, just as the wider world was beginning to take notice. The legacy of Ian Curtis, and Joy Division as a whole, is still felt strongly and they remain hugely influential to each new crop of forward thinking guitar bands. The film features scarcely seen footage and performances, as well as insight from the cream of the Manchester music scene.

/blurb\

De Rotterdamse School
Rotterdam, art documentary, punk, 1980s
The director of this documentary (100 mins.) identifies a group of artists from the eighties as the Rotterdam School: Henk Tas, Lydia Schouten, Henk Elenga, Rommert Boonstra and Charly van Rest. Among the shared characteristics are the use of still-life photography, found objects, polaroids and video. The artists, however, do not adhere to this definition. But their work is similar in the sense that it exudes a daring originality, subversiveness, and above all a vibrant fantasy. The leading idea was most manifest in photography, resulting in a new style and authorship, where the photographer moved from reconstructor to being an artist and photos were no longer pictures but a one-frame feature film in itself. This DVD brings together interviews with and portraits of the artists, as well as showing their work. Also featured are the graphic design group Hard Werken, a video clip by the group Kiem showing a choreography for harbour cranes, and various fragments of a TV show called Neon made by Bob Visser, a documentary of the Utopia collective and a short on Rotterdam als Totaaltheater ( Rotterdam as Gesamtkunstwerk). In Dutch only, without subtitles.

(click text to a link to the wonderful UNDERBELLY ! that's where i found this blurb)

Rondos - Destroy The Entertainment
Communist Anthems, revolutionary art!
"De Rondos were around from 1978 until 1980. Besides being an art-collective (dubio) who were sharing a building they used as a base to launch their commie rockets at CRASSholes, the police, nihilist punx and the corrupted consumer society at large... they made some fantastic records, too. Grating, repetitive, stripped down angry compositions. Songs is maybe not the right word. They introduced a new gestalt in the Dutch music world; aesthetically nothing to do with rock, playing on their own terms, writing their own zines, creating DIY platforms to be inclusive and inspirational. Rehearsal spaces, gigs and stencil machines. Power to the people. This double LP collect their singles on the first side, a selection out of a live concert in 1978 on the second. The second LP contains their Red Attack LP. The recordings are raw and to the point. No studio trickery, overdubs or hippy noodling here. The sound is maybe most related to English bands like Wire, Crisis, Crass (their friends turned foes) and Gang Of Four. They heavily inspired a new wave of Dutch bands especially the Wormer & Utreg 'scenes.' The Ex, Zowiso, de Kift (Rondos drummer!), the Nixe en vele anderen! Inserts: Foldout LP-sized lyric sheet. 24-page booklet of the band's history in English, written by their singer Johannes van de Weert in 2009. Including a lot of photos and artwork."

/blurb\

Contains 2 LPs and a booklet of lyrics/poems
