As surely as as any other influence, places make bands. Liverpool and the Beatles, Detroit and the Stooges, Springsteen and Jersey. One of the strengths of this propulsive, incisive music documentary – one of its many strengths – is how imaginatively it communicates how Manchester made Joy Division, and how Joy Division remade Manchester, an aging, wheezing English industrial powerhouse given a cultural and even spiritual infusion by a sound that was remarkably, inexplicably new.
