Description
An account of the resource
In 1971 there was no Rock 'n' Roll as out-there as this. During the sixties Frank Zappa, Beefheart, Red Krayola and others were transporting Rock into wierder territory; Faust took inspiration from these artists, but were far more radical. "Why Don't You Eat Carrots" takes clear influence from Zappa's "Lumpy Gravy"; the noise collages, the surreal, echo-drenched dialogue, the warped sense of wit, yet Faust achieve a level of sheer mindfuckery that "Lumpy Gravy" never did. "Meadow Meal" is equally amazing, an ethereal Psych Folk jam featuring searing guitar workouts and mournful church organ, opening with a dense soundscape of rattling percussion and electronic effects.
Unfortunately, after a truly astonishing first half, Faust fumble the ball on side two. "Miss Fortune" doesn't really seem to go anywhere- the first five minutes or so consist of tiresome wah-wah wankery, and the piece fails to improve until it is nearing the end, when ghoulish goblin voices leap out at the listener, and we are treated with something that resembles a noise-rock rendition of "Louie Louie". Though not without it's moments, it's hard to deny that "Miss Fortune" lets the whole album down. Still, the fantastic first side makes this essential Krautrock!
Péron said that Faust "had the urge of saying something completely different", and if you want to hear something completely different, I urge you to give this album a whirl!

On his second solo effort here, one time Palais Schaumburg member and overarching Neue Deutsche Welle figurehead Hiller (two of whose singles have been featured elsewhere on MS) has excised much of the rock element that underpinned his first full length outing Ein Bündel Fäulnis in der Grube. What we have here in lieu of that here is a queer mix of quasi-symphonic and sampler centric bombast and art pop fracture, portioned out with lots of gaps of space in the mix and mixed up with bouts of mischievous chamber R.I.O. of the ZNR, Comelade or Look De Bouk school, occasionally even migrating into Danny Elfman Pee Wee's Big Adventure territory.

/blurb from here\

An account of the resource
Very influential and popular electronic music piece from 1967 by American composer who co-founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center.

Within the weightless fissures of silence, all has now become silvery and glistens -- jiggling quietly like splitting pools of quicksilver in spoons’ curving beaming under moonlight. The becalmed come down is simmering and soothing and twinkling in the darkness like distant supernovas transmitting their final moments light years after the fact before folding quietly back into the void. But it gently takes its time before sliding off into silence as signals still rise to the surface of the now deepening calm that has been threatening to envelop it all along. And yet, as the twittering of cosmic crickets diminishes, it gives rise to a signal of rare contentment within that huge, sightless universe -- at once unfixed and ultimately, unmoving in eternal silence.

/blurb from here\

Description
An account of the resource
"Group ONGAKU, founded mainly by students at Tokyo National University of Fine Art & Music, was the 1st collective musical improvisation group. The group began their activities in 1958, & from the naming of the group in 1960 onward continued until somewhere around 1962. They attempted to create acoustics corresponding to actual time & space by means of collective improvisation. Although methodically different, the music that they pursued incidentally shared common directions with contemporaries such as John Cage & other involved in the avant-garde artist collective of Fluxus." - Takako Okamoto, taken from original liner notes. "Three wild & woolly scrambling tracks that melt nodes. Dished are dropped, vacuum cleaners get fried, saxes, organs & cellos howl, Group Ongaku were doing it all when the only other cosmic acolyte on the scene was Alan Watts. And these recordings-laid down a couple of years AHEAD of Big Als acid jabber- make This Is It sound like the lysergic soundtrack to Hello Dolly! by comparison. Concurrently, these primal articulations bear the distinction of sounding like the COMPLETE Nurse With Wound List playing at once.. And when you realize that said posse includes Airway, Cromagnon, Don Bradshaw Leather & Throbbing Gristle among its formidable ranks, then one must understand that what is passing between their ears is an aural Excalibur of avant/experimental freakdom that almost no one knew existed. A staggering & crucial lost piece to the ever burgeoning puzzle of the weird." - Phinneas Barbital, author, Cracks Inside Planet Brain (forthcoming, 2011). "Those familiar w/Julian Copes seminal Japrocksampler will recognize the name Group Ongaku as the cornerstone of the 32 page entry, "Experimental Japan. Simply put, this collective was edenic as the foundation of fusing avant classical input with organic, improvisational output, thus forging a singular Minimalist sound on par w/similar, radical outre composition that was taking place in the West at the same time (Cage & Stockhausens work in particular). That members of Group Ongaku would later be instrumental in founding Japans Fluxus movement as well as form the legendary Taj Mahal Travellers seems almost elementary. And while to some these recording might sound archaic, their importance can never be understated or denied. Recorded in 1960 & 61 respectively, these 3 tracks were original 1st released on CD in a small edition in 1996. Long thought to be impossible to replicate onto vinyl due to time constraints (side 1 is practically 35 minutes in length), new technology in Japanese audio restoration has made it possible for Music Of Group Ongaku to finally see a proper LP release. And the sound is most exhilarating. Personnel is as follows; Takehisa Kosugi (violin, sax, tape), Chieko Shiomi (piano), Mikio Tojima (cello), Yasunao Tone (sax, tape), Genichi Tsuge (guitar), Shukou Mizuno (cello, drums tape). Japanese import, includes English language insert, edition of 300." - SEER Sound Archive. We were thoroughly stunned hearing this after nabbing a few of the CDs way back when - ahead of its time to say the least. Very highly recommended!

/blurb from here\

NO LABEL: otto muehl is an austrian convicted child molester, who is best known as one of the co-founders as well as the most exciting participant of viennese actionism. he's the sort of guy who might fuck a swan, and then scream a little poem about it. in the sixties his aim was 'to overcome painting on canvas through staging the process of its destruction'. he made rhizomatic structures with scrap iron ("gerümpelplastiken"), but soon proceeded to the "aktion" in the vein of the new york happenings. gradually, muehl began to distance himself from "aktion". he regarded the "happening as a bourgeois artform, mere art".

This is an exact reproduction of his 1971 "psycho motorik" lp, which documents that very departure.

/blurb\

Description
An account of the resource
In 1930 the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) wrote a series of small pieces for school orchestras. It was described as a “play for children” depicting the construction and survey of a modern city. The unusual thing about it is the age of its inhabitants:
“In our city the grown ups have no say (…) Our mayor is seven years old, and all uncles and aunties are children. Even the traffic warden is a child.” We Build A Town comes across as strange in more than one way. Firstly, as a bizarre alternative blueprint to an eldery society. Secondly, as a combination of constructivist music and antiquated-modernist lyrics. These lyrics reflect traits of naïve belief in progress and open repression.

The complexity of the upcoming technical age is disguised as being simple, and all aspects of modern city life take on a model-like character. As a result, a strangely “adult“ intelligence seems to speak through the organisation of this children's world. Topics covered are traffic, education, hygiene, consumer protection and crime. The author of the text, Robert Seitz (1891-1938), develops a penchant for listing occupational groups (“I am the train conductor”), whose members have to deal constantly with complaints from clients (“There are maggots in this”). At the end of the play, thieves who steal watches, potatoes, cars and young dogs are arrested.

Half a century after the original was created, two German artists with a punk and new wave background - Holger Hiller and Thomas Fehlmann - reinterpret the play and release it in 1981 as a cassette tape on Ata Tak, a label based in the German city of Düsseldorf. The classic orchestration of the original is replaced by synthesizer and manipulated voices. Apart from that, the original score is strictly adhered to. The use of electronic instruments and voice effects not only gives new life to the futuristic character of the pieces, but also subtly hints to its origins in the world of adults.

Like the flame of a burning fuse leading to a bundle of explosives, the tape wanders through the children's bodies and back into the heads of the grown-ups.

An account of the resource
This 2LP is the first Luigi Russolo's Intonarumori complete reconstruction ever attempted. Some of the Russolo instruments have been reconstructed here for the first time. The famous intonarumori (or 'noise intoners') of the Futurists could be considered the earliest 'techno music' instruments of the twentieth century.

The 1st public performance of Luigi Russolo's intonarumori project took place in 1913 at Modena's Teatro Storchi, Italy. Luciano Chessa conducted this new orchestra of early Futurist pieces as well as specially commissioned works from legendary contemporary musicians and composers from the experimental music world: Einstürzende Neubauten frontman and Nick Cave collaborator Blixa Bargeld, Deep Listening pioneer Pauline Oliveros, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle vocalist Mike Patton, experimental saxophonist Ulrich Krieger, singer and composer Nick Hallett, contemporary classical and electronic musician James Fei, jazz singer and guitarist Margareth Kammerer, composer, instrument builder, and performer Ellen Fullman, composer, musician and soundcdesigner Teho Teardo....

/blurb from here\
