It turned out to be a beautiful CD, on which giants from Latin jazz such as Dave Valentin (flute), Ray Barretto and Marc Quiñones (both percussion), David Sanchez (tenor saxophone) and Eddie Palmieri (piano), among others, contributed. Two pieces by Cal Tjader have been recorded: "Viva cepeda" and "Triste". The song "Resemblance" comes from the 1977 album "Palmieri & Tjader". "Tjader-ized" also features new compositions, such as the title track written by Palmieri and Duo plus four written by Samuels and Palmieri. The influence of Tjader is clearly present in all eleven songs on this CD. The arrangements of existing songs like "Bachi" (Clare Fischer) and "Soul dance" (Dizzy Gillespie / Chano Pozo) are very nice. Fine contemporary Latin jazz with Cal Tjader as a starting point! And Dave Samuels, best known for his work with Spyro Gyra, clearly shows on this CD why he can be counted among the best vibraphonists of our time. He leads his ensemble Oktopus Connection that also has a record out on Setola di Maiale. He is also part of Aire, an avant-jazz quartet and Schrödinger’s Cat. La Foresta is part of the Joseph Circelli Vinkel Trio from the Bologna-area. La Foresta proves himself as a percussionist with many ideas in this collaboration with Marogna. Many different patterns, colours and sounds come out of his hands. Marogna is an equally capable musician. There’s more: As interpreted by vocalists Lisala and Maya Azucena, Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango” soars and pops, Mazz Swift’s dervish violin giving it a stunning Gypsy overlay. Burnt Sugar may be a collective, and it’s a jam band for sure, but Tate and Nickerson’s production guarantees each player full power, and the group’s purpose is unmistakable: to shake things up, your booty included. This important collection of material eventually made its way to Goldsmiths College, London, who have been administering it on behalf of the Daphne Oram Trust for the last few years. The collection holds over 400 tapes made by Oram during her lifetime, and 211 of those have been archived and catalogued by the college so far. "The Daphne Oram Tapes: Volume One" is the result of almost two years spent trawling through the archive in an attempt to piece together a coherent document of one of the most pioneering and genuinely experimental characters in electronic music history. Although some of Oram's recordings have surfaced on the "Oramics" compilation, this set reveals a much more complex, dark, sometimes disturbing and often beautiful body of work which has, until now, been partially obscured by the more recognisable Radiophonic bleeps and whirrs the Workshop is best known for. This first volume focuses on Oram's love of experimental forms, of Musique Concrète, of the science and mystery of sound and composition. It comes at a time when her work is only just starting to gain wider acknowledgment in scholarly as well as popular circles. The "Oramics" machine (the first electronic musical instrument in history to be designed and built by a woman) has gone on display at the Science Museum in London, an important step in what will no doubt be a sustained effort to assert Oram's rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music. The set reveals a wealth of musical treasures that include recordings and sound effects made for '2001' and Jack Clayton's "the Innocents", all the way through to field recordings made in Africa. This first volume, put together with the help of Goldsmiths and Daphne's family, is the first in a planned series that will, for the first time, make Oram's most important and personal recordings available for public consumption. The subject of the cycle is a contemporary version of Schubertian romanticism: the inner struggle of man with nature, his nature and himself. As a leitmotiv of the cycle, this can be translated into the struggle with technology and knowledge (is lettuce good for you or not? / why can't I connect to the net?) of modern man, with the not unimportant underlying theme of the urge for simplicity, clarity and safety and freedom, about which it is difficult to reach a consensus. The lyrics are distilled from the life story of David Hasselhoff, the actor and rock star – he is particularly successful in Austria – who became famous by maintaining an intimate relationship with his car 'KITT', and frequently staring 'Ins Blaue Hinein' during his work for 'Baywatch'. The lyrics, which were in principle written for a large audience, have remarkably enough, when a number of separate sentences are isolated, a depth that is reminiscent of Greek pathos of the purest kind and deal with almost all subjects that modern man (can) worry about. The lyrics can be interpreted as 'modernist romanticism', i.e.: the belief in the feasibility of the world. The language in which the cycle is sung is of course German, the language of technology, Weltschmerz and Goethe (of course with surtitles). Coolhaven's Strømblocque Phantasiën were eventually published several times; as a stage piece at various locations (including the Crossing Border festival in The Hague, Club Transmediale in Berlin and November Music in Den Bosch) with an extensive cast (Mariska Simons and Martijn van Boven, plus three young sexy dancers), as a radio play, produced by the Worm Sound Studio and broadcast by the VPRO and also as a CD on the one-off Taple Records.
